| On January 1, 2000, Raymond S. Greenberg became the eighth president of the Medical University of South Carolina. A native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Dr. Greenberg graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1976 with highest honors in chemistry. He completed his medical studies at Duke University in 1979 and received a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University in 1980. Dr. Greenberg undertook training in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital before returning to North Carolina to complete a doctorate in epidemiology in 1983.
Immediately thereafter, Dr. Greenberg joined the faculty of Emory University as an assistant professor in the Department of Community Medicine. His initial responsibility was to direct the operation of a cancer registry in metropolitan Atlanta, with financial support from the National Cancer Institute. Within three years, he was promoted to the rank of associate professor with tenure, and in late 1987, he was appointed as the chair of the newly reorganized Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the School of Medicine. When Emory University decided to establish a School of Public Health in 1990, Dr. Greenberg was appointed as its first dean. He served in that role for five years – a time of extraordinary growth for the School. During his tenure as dean, funding was raised to construct a state-of-the-art teaching and research building which was completed in 1994. In 1995, Dr. Greenberg was appointed vice president for academic affairs and provost of the Medical University of South Carolina. In that capacity, he provided oversight to all of the educational programs of the institution, as administered through its six colleges. His responsibilities also included the coordination of research activities; the level of extramural funding doubled during his tenure in that position. Dr. Greenberg was selected by the Board of Trustees to succeed James B. Edwards as president of the Medical University. The author of about 150 scientific publications, Dr. Greenberg is nationally recognized for his research on the causes of cancer, with a particular focus on cancer among African Americans. His textbook, Medical Epidemiology, which has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Korean now is in its fourth edition. Dr. Greenberg has been appointed to many national advisory boards, including the chairmanship of the Epidemiology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health and the Preventive Medicine/Public Health Test Committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has also served on the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research, the Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee on Research for the American Cancer Society, and the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Health Statistics.
