The Economic Impact of Health Sciences South Carolina

Using health sciences research to advance South Carolina's economy is at the very core of Health Sciences South Carolina's mission. We are working to generate economy and entrepreneurial opportunities in three ways:

  • By attracting a significant increase in public and private sector funding to South Carolina for health sciences research.
  • By recruiting nationally prominent scientists to South Carolina, who bring and create intellectual property to stimulate the state’s knowledge-based economy.
  • By creating and attracting health-related companies to South Carolina that result in job and wealth creation.

Through initiatives such as the Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE) Program, HSSC is making this possible for South Carolina. Each research-driven Center is working to develop intellectual property for licensing and create the entrepreneurial impetus for spin-off companies. HSSC also is in the process of developing a statewide health information technology (IT) infrastructure, which when completed will support the rapid scale-up and administration of commercial clinical trials of pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
