Chimowitz Named Endowed Chair For Stroke Center

Stroke Expert Named Endowed Chair in Translational Neurology for Stroke Center

COLUMBIA, S.C., December 31, 2009 - - Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) is pleased to announce that Marc Chimowitz, MD, has been selected as the second and final endowed chair for the HSSC-supported Stroke Center. An expert in neurology and stroke treatment, Chimowitz has been named the Countess Alicia Paolozzi Endowed Chair in Translational Neurology.

Dr. Chimowitz joins Robert Adams, MS, MD, who is the other endowed chair for the Stroke Center. Together, they will work to improve acute stroke management and treatment. His research is focused on treatments to prevent stroke caused by narrowing of brain arteries. He also studies the value of using stents to prevent strokes in patients whose brain arteries have been hardened and narrowed due to plaque.

The Stroke Center is one of 12 HSSC-supported Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE), a program that uses state and non-state funds to create advanced research centers to enhance economic development in South Carolina. World-class researchers are recruited to lead the centers.

Dr. Chimowitz earned his medical degree from the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 1981. He completed his residency at Tufts University New England Medical Center and his fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Stroke Center. He is board certified in neurology with a specialty in stroke neurology. Dr. Chimowitz will hold his endowed chair position at the Medical University of South Carolina.
