As the first statewide (HSSC) biomedical research collaborative in the United States, Health Sciences South Carolina brings a unique perspective and approach to research. Unique in that the organization combines the intellectual talents and physical resources of the state's three largest research-intensive universities—Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina—with the state's three largest health systems—Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center, Palmetto Health and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System—to advance an exciting research enterprise.
HSSC is an active, enthusiastic participant in South Carolina's Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE) Program (see below). HSSC currently supports 12 CoEEs that are addressing a wide range of issues, including healthcare quality, clinical re-engineering, healthcare facilities design and testing, cancer, heart disease, and medication safety. These Centers are magnets for talent and the resulting research is creating advances for health and economic development.
HSSC also is building a statewide information technology infrastructure to support research and clinical trials. The infrastructure will link of the six member organizations, creating an attractive asset for research funded by government and corporate entities. HSSC members have their own active clinical trials programs and when combined with those supported by HSSC, create hope for patients faced with life-threatening illnesses.
