Brain Imaging

The Brain Imaging Center of Economic Excellence (CoEE) was one of the first CoEEs to be funded, and was the first to involve multiple universities, paving the way for other centers. Approved in June 2003, the Brain Imaging CoEE is gaining traction in its economic development and health initiatives. The CoEE has research relationships with Force Protection, Inc., and Siemens Medical USA, both of which have contributed substantially to the center. Spin-off company, Cephos, Inc. (www.cephoscorp.com), continues to grow. Current federal funding of the Brain Imaging Center is in excess of $7 million, with more U.S. Department of Defense grants in play. Additionally, the Brain Imaging Center has been selected to submit a proposal as the dedicated neuro imaging core for a $60 million U.S. Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program clinical consortium.

Research conducted by the Brain Imaging CoEE will lead to technological developments in a number of industries including medical device manufacturing, MRI hardware technology and software development. Two recently acquired MRI systems, a Siemens Trio MRI and a Bruker 7-Tesla MRI, are attracting important companies such as Glaxo-Smith Kline, Jazz Pharmaceuticals and BioValve for research projects.
