The goal of the Center for Healthcare Quality is to become a nationally prominent research center in the areas of bioinformatics and healthcare quality and patient safety; a center of economic excellence (CoEE) that sparks job creation and other economic development initiatives. The Center is capitalizing on recent scientific discoveries and technological advances, as well as South Carolina’s unique characteristics and resources, to conduct innovative research on major health problems that plague our state. The Center is in the process of creating a statewide network of researchers from all six Health Science South Carolina (HSSC) institutions that are tied together through a broad platform of biomedical technologies and cutting edge informatics systems to conduct translational clinical, econometric, health sciences, and health systems research.
At the core of this effort is an initiative that is building an integrated information technology (IT) infrastructure across South Carolina that will enhance and advance research across HSSC's member organizations as well as all of South Carolina’s biomedical CoEEs. In so doing, the Center seeks to generate economic opportunities in the form of job creation, licensable technology, spin-off companies, and capital investment. The Center is focused on making South Carolina a national model for translational research and the development, integration, and mining of large data systems to enhance disease management, quality of care, patient safety and outcomes, healthcare financing, and healthcare system reform.
The Center for Healthcare Quality has made significant progress in creating this critical IT infrastructure. This shared resource is vital to South Carolina's biomedical research community and in attracting clinical trials funded by government and industry. It will improve the state’s healthcare delivery system by allowing patient information to be shared in a secure environment between healthcare providers. Finally, the IT infrastructure will support job creation and attract investment.
