According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, South Carolina ranks sixth in the nation in obesity and seventh in diabetes. Chronic diseases like these have caused the state’s public health and economy to suffer. The Technology Center to Enhance Healthful Lifestyles is addressing this serious issue by focusing its research on developing new technologies for improving health, preventing illnesses and managing chronic health problems.
The Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE) board approved the Technology Center to Enhance Healthful Lifestyles to receive $3 million in South Carolina Education Lottery funds in fall 2009. HSSC will partially match the state’s investment through private funding. This Center is the twelfth HSSC-supported CoEE. HSSC partners, University of South Carolina (USC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), will collaborate with one another on attacking chronic diseases. Under the co-direction of USC’s Steven Blair, PED, and Carolyn Jenkins, DRPH, of MUSC, the Center will develop technology, such as interactive, web-based coaching programs, to help people make healthier lifestyle choices.
