Focused on preserving older adult independence through interdisciplinary research, the SeniorSMART™ Center of Economic Excellence (CoEE) is focused on three key areas: SmartHOME™, SmartWHEELS™ and SmartBRAIN™. The timing couldn’t be better for this Center. Baby Boomers are becoming “senior boomers” and will wield unprecedented wealth and have different expectations about their homes, health care, and other aspects of life than previous generations. The economic potential for products and services created by SeniorSMART is tremendous.
Recently the Center successfully recruited its first endowed chair holder, Sue Levkoff, ScD, SM, MSW. Dr. Levkoff will serve as the Community and Social Support--SmartHOME endowed chair at the University of South Carolina. She is one of three endowed chair holders for the Center. Dr. Levkoff is an internationally recognized expert on geriatrics and aging. She comes to South Carolina from Harvard University. Her appointment was made possible through the generosity of Columbia, SC, businessman and philanthropist, Charlton Hall, who is now in his seventies. SeniorSMART was recently featured on the ABC news in Los Angeles. Click here to read the story.
