Inception: 2003
Funding: $10 million | One of the last remaining frontiers in science and medicine is understanding how the human brain works, both in health and in disease. Central to this exploding area of science are new non-invasive tools for imaging the brain. The main area of rapid development in this area involves magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI. This area of research will lead to intervention technologies to improve the function of individuals whose brains have been damaged by illnesses such as stroke or Parkinson’s Disease. Research conducted by the Brain Imaging Center of Excellence will lead to technological developments in a number of industries including medical device manufacturing, MRI hardware technology, and software development. The Center will also train postdoctoral fellows and graduate and undergraduate students in this burgeoning area of research. Four endowed professors will lead the Center’s research:
MUSC Endowed Professor of Brain Imaging MUSC Endowed Professor of Imaging Science USC Endowed Chair in Cognitive Neuroimaging USC Endowed Chair in Imaging BiophysicsMore information about the Brain Imaging Center of Economic Excellence can be found at:
