Endowed Chair Holder in Patient Simulation Education and Research: John Schaefer, M.D. Professor of Anesthesia & Perioperative Medicine Medical Director, Medical University Hospital Medical University of South Carolina
Inception: 2005 Funding: $12 million | o improve quality of care, reforms are needed in the way doctors and other health professionals are educated and how they employ technology in their practices. he Center for Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety will develop models of improved patient care and health professional education through the dissemination of information and the use of technology. Research conducted by the center will have the following aims: 1. Educating physicians and other clinicians about best practices through the use of evidence-based medicine. 2. Investigating the application of new and existing information and technologies in improving student and trainee education and quality of care. 3. Developing new technologies to improve the effectiveness of education and health professional performance in promoting better patient care.
ne area of research will be the use of human simulation laboratories which allow trainees to learn on a mannequin or other simulated device rather than on an actual patient. In these laboratories, clinicians will be able to practice uncommonly performed procedures until repeated drills hone their skills. The Center for Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety will develop and test the next wave of simulation platforms for education and development of a safer healthcare system. The Center will also examine the economic, systems-based, organizational and human factors that impede the rapid adoption of new educational and patient care technologies.
he Center will be headquartered in Charleston, with campuses in Greenville and Columbia. Clemson will be a partner in the Upstate Center. |
