hospital and tertiary center, and two acute care hospitals, Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia and Easley.

The 1,247-bed system is JCAHO-accredited and has more than 9,000 employees and 1,100 physicians. Each year, its hospitals treat nearly a half million patients, welcome more than 6,600 babies into the world, treat more than 82,000 pediatric patients and 3,000 cancer patients, accommodate more than 131,000 emergency department visits, perform more than 50,000 mammograms, and make more than 43,000 home care visits.

Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia is a regional community teaching medical center that treats patients from every county in the state. Areas of excellence include cardiology, obstetrics (including high-risk pregnancy and genetic counseling), oncology (including a site of the Palmetto Health Breast Center), orthopaedics (including the Total Joint Center’s unique program for hip and knee replacements), neonatology, pediatrics, surgery and trauma. Palmetto Health Richland is home to state’s only free-standing Children’s Hospital, which offers more than 32 medical subspecialties devoted to children. It also is home to the Midlands’ only Level I Trauma Center, and is the site of the only Gamma Knife Center in SC. Palmetto Health Heart Hospital is the state’s only free-standing heart hospital.

Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia is one of the state’s most respected health care providers, committed to the spiritual, physical and mental health needs of its patients. Areas of excellence include behavioral care, obstetrics, oncology (including a site of the Palmetto Health Breast Center and the region’s first mobile mammography van), orthopaedics, surgery and women’s services. Home to The Birthplace, more than 3,500 babies were delivered at Baptist in 2007.

Palmetto Health Baptist Columbia

Palmetto Health Baptist Easley has been a leading community hospital for more than 50 years. The hospital’s areas of excellence include surgery, obstetrics, emergency medicine, plus imaging and diagnostics. Palmetto Health Baptist Easley boasts a 40,000-square-foot outpatient services facility and a 4,000-square-foot diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratory. The hospital is committed to providing “Care You Can Believe In” while improving the physical, emotional and spiritual health of every individual it serves.

Beyond the walls of its two primary campuses, Palmetto Health opened Palmetto Health Parkridge in 2004. The new facility features an Ambulatory Surgery Center, an Outpatient Imaging Center with the area’s fastest Open MRI, a laboratory and physician offices that include an extended-hours physician practice called Convenience Care. Palmetto Health Parkridge is the first step in the hospital’s plans to build a full-service hospital campus in Northwest Columbia. Palmetto Health gained approval to construct in 2007 is engaging in   legal objections from a competitor.

Patients who receive care at Palmetto Health also benefit from the strong affiliation with the University of South Carolina, which includes research and education partnerships with the USC School of Medicine and 12 physician residency programs training 220 residents and fellows. In addition to its wide variety of clinical services, Palmetto Health is unique in its level of commitment to community outreach. The winner of two NOVA awards from the American Hospital Association for community service, Palmetto Health has provided more than $22 million in health outreach to underserved populations since 1998.
