| South Carolina Coordinated Cancer Initiative Inception: 2006
As a result of the ongoing working relationship among South Carolina's largest health systems and teaching hospitals, Health Sciences South Carolina has expressed an intention to amplify the efforts in cancer research and treatment.
A convocation of cancer leaders from these institutions agreed that the goal of a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center designation for South Carolina is best achieved through the long-standing efforts at the Hollings Cancer Center of the Medical University of South Carolina.
On April 27, 2006, the partners of Health Sciences South Carolina signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the first statewide cancer research initiative in the US.
The SC Coordinated Cancer Initiative will have locations at: | » Hollings Cancer Center, MUSC, Charleston | | » South Carolina Cancer Center, Palmetto Health | | and USC, Columbia | | » Greenville Hospital System Cancer Center and | | Clemson University, Greenville | | » Gibbs Regional Cancer Center, Spartanburg | | Regional Healthcare System |
The Hollings Cancer Center will lead the initiative with support from the other cancer centers. In addition to research, the South Carolina Coordinated Cancer Initiative will establish a statewide clinical trials network, a statewide tissue bank system and standardized cancer care protocols. These ventures will enable potentially lifesaving research to move from the lab and into patient care more quickly and efficiently. Download the Memorandum of Understanding by clicking here: MOU
