| The South Carolina Healthcare Quality Trust (SCHQT) is a voluntary collaborative between HSCC, the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA), and the Premier health care alliance to benefit all 65 acute care hospitals in South Carolina. The group uses research to identify causes of and solutions to preventable infections and then shares the results with all acute care hospitals.
The three partners will invest more than $1.7 million over three years to support the effort, and the return on investment has the potential to be significant. Based on data from 16 South Carolina hospitals representing 42 percent of the state's annual discharges, the efforts of the SCHQT have the potential to save the state's hospitals as much as $40 million and reduce the length of stay of South Carolina patients by up to 24,000 days. As an immediate benefit of the SCHQT, the state's hospitals have access to an information portal that provides data and information on eliminating infections.
As chair of HSSC’s Quality Improvement Council, Dr. Shawn Stinson is playing an important leadership role in the SCHQT. Stinson is the vice president for clinical quality and patient safety at Palmetto Health, one of HSSC's supporting organizations. He is also leading Palmetto Health’s effort to implement computer provider order entry (CPOE), an initiative to reduce medication errors across the Palmetto Health system. Stinson is also an associate professor of clinical internal medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
