HSSC Reaches Five-Year Milestone

Opportunities

Health Sciences South Carolina’s (HSSC) vision is to transform the state’s health and economic well-being through research. We are also committed to educating and training the healthcare workforce.

In our first five years, HSSC has experienced unprecedented growth as a direct result of statewide collaboration. HSSC is a major supporter of and participant in the state’s SmartState Program, providing financial and administrative support to 12 centers. To date, 10 world-class researchers have been recruited as endowed chairs. The SmartState centers have created well-paying research and support jobs, including more than 20 within the Center for Healthcare Quality alone. Research conducted within the SmartState Centers is creating investment opportunities and startup companies and providing the State of South Carolina with a stronger foundation in the knowledge economy.

HSSC has engaged strategic partners like the South Carolina Hospital Association to address issues such as healthcare quality and patient safety. We are leading an effort along with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to develop a statewide strategic plan for e-health. HSSC is in the process of developing a statewide health information technology infrastructure to support research and advance patient care. These and other efforts have attracted investment from government funding sources like the National Institute of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Federal Communications Commission, and positioned South Carolina to receive funding through the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
