Making Connections in China
Collaboration
In 2008, HSSC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tianjin Bureau of Public Health in the People’s Republic of China. HSSC President and CEO Jay Moskowitz traveled to China in November to meet with the vice mayor for Health and Education of Tianjin, China, the president of the Tianjin Medical University, and the director of the Tianjin Bureau of Public Health. The objective of the agreement is to develop academic, scientific, and clinical collaborations between HSSC and Tinajin, a city of over 11 million people. According to Moskowitz, the Chinese are particularly interested in clinical simulation and other training projects, healthcare facility design, and quality and clinical effectiveness initiatives, all of which are addressed in HSSC’s SmartState Centers. Said Moskowitz, “This was an important first step in establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with the world’s most populated nation, one that could become an important market for research, products, and services generated in South Carolina.”
