Local Workforce Support

April 24, 2012

Increased adoption of EHR changes the way physicians’ offices operate, changes traditional job responsibilities and creates new jobs. The CITIA-SC Center partnered with the South Carolina Technical College System (SCTCS) to expand existing curricula to train health information technology workers.  Credit and non-credit programs included training topics such as health informatics, health information management, EHR adoption and use, and other related topics.

The SCTCS implemented an Associate Degree in Applied Science with a major in Health Information Management (HIM). This track was available on three campuses - Florence-Darlington Technical College, Greenville Technical College and Midlands Technical College - making the program available to students across the state. CITIA-SC provided three pilot grants ($25,000 each); two in year one and one in year two, to help expand the availability of these types of educational opportunities.
