A major emphasis for HSSC are programs that advance healthcare quality and patient safety in hospitals. In late 2008, HSSC, the South Carolina Hospital Association, and Premier, Inc., signed a three-way hospital performance improvement alliance to address hospital-acquired infections. The effort was well timed. World Health Organization estimated that more than one in 12 hospital patients acquires an infection, which can lead to longer hospital stays, higher costs, and potentially death.
