Advancing Patient Safety in South Carolina

March 14, 2008

HSSC, the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) and PHT Services, Inc., sponsored South Carolina’s first annual Patient Safety Symposium in 2008. Held in March at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, the two-day event featured national speakers such as Don Berwick, the CEO and co-founder of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, Quint Studer, founder of The Studer Group and author of Hardwiring Excellence, and Linda Kenney, a national patient safety advocate.

HSSC played a prominent role at the Symposium. CEO and President Jay Moskowitz welcomed a crowd of 300 attendees from across the state and co-hosted the first Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Champion Awards ceremony. MUSC’s Frances Lee, with the Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety SmartState Center, led two sessions on patient simulation training. Other HSSC member initiatives were featured in a report distributed to SCHA member hospitals.

Playing a lead role in this very visible event was valuable in raising the HSSC’s profile. Hospitals are important partners and consumers of our research projects, initiatives, educational curricula, and commercial products.
