HSSC Announces $6 Million SmartState® Center in Regenerative Medicine

February 7, 2005

A new SmartState® Center in Regenerative Medicine has been approved with HSSC providing matching funds. Regenerative medicine is the regeneration of tissue and organs for the purpose of repairing, replacing and maintaining organ function. This Center combines statewide expertise in developmental biology, adult stem cell technology and tissue engineering. The Center for Regenerative Medicine is a collaborative initiative involving Clemson, MUSC and USC. The Center will enable the in vivo regeneration of damaged tissues to return them to full functionality and the in vitro production of tissues for transplantation when regeneration is not possible.
