South Carolina Surgical Quality Collaborative

For the past eight years, HSSC has partnered with the South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) on initiatives to improve patient safety and healthcare quality. The collaboration received a major boost in December 2014 when the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation awarded a three-year, $3.8 million grant for the South Carolina Surgical Quality Collaborative (SC SQC) to improve surgical quality safety in the state, specifically focusing on 15 targeted surgical procedures.

How this is Funded:

Why Are We Doing It

The vision of the SC Surgical Quality Collaborative is to enable delivery of highly reliable, evidence-based, patient-centered general surgical care to all South Carolinians. The SC SQC has partnered with engaged surgical leaders across the state to establish a continuous quality improvement structure and learning healthcare system. Using near real-time reporting of clinical data, dashboards of metrics and benchmark data are shared with surgical leaders to aid in identifying improvement opportunities and the implementation of best practices. Learning is facilitated by site visits to participating hospitals and collaborative meetings. In addition, the SC SQC is committed to training the next generation of SC surgical leaders in quality improvement techniques and data evaluation by working towards incorporating quality improvement training into surgical resident curricula. This comprehensive, collaborative, and data-driven approach creates an engaged surgical community. By targeting high volume and high risk surgical procedures, the SC SQC will achieve measurable reductions in post-operative complications and lowering general surgery costs.
