Who We Are

In 2008, the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation awarded a $5 million grant to support an endowed chair within the SmartState® Center in Regenerative Medicine. The grant allowed the HSSC-supported center to recruit Martin Morad, PhD, an internationally acclaimed researcher known for his work in cardiovascular research, as the SmartState® Endowed Chair. In 2015, The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation awarded HSSC a $3.8 million grant to create and implement a three-year, statewide research initiative to improve surgical quality and address outcomes disparities. This initiative, called the South Carolina Surgical Quality Collaborative, also involves longtime HSSC collaborator, the South Carolina Hospital Association, and has the potential to make surgery safer for all South Carolinians.
