Harris Pastides, PhD


University of South Carolina

Harris Pastides began his presidency at the University of South Carolina on Aug. 1, 2008. Under his leadership the state’s flagship system is experiencing remarkable growth and positive change. Discovery and innovation at Carolina are fueling the knowledge economy, attracting several Fortune 500 partners including IBM and Boeing. In 2015 alone, Carolina received $243 million in external research funding from federal agencies, corporations and foundations. Pastides continues to champion ground-breaking programs like Palmetto College, On Your Time Graduation, Gamecock Guarantee, and Gamecock Gateway—all providing greater access and affordability to South Carolinians seeking a higher education degree. Prior to joining the university’s faculty as dean of the Arnold School of Public Health, Pastides was a Professor of Epidemiology and Chairman of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He earned his master’s in public health and his PhD in Epidemiology from Yale University. He also serves as the chairman of the NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors.
