Les joined HSSC in 2013 as Chief Medical Informatics Officer and as such works to expand the organization’s learning health system across the state and throughout the South. In addition to his role at HSSC, Les serves as the Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) Chief Research Informatics Officer; Director, MUSC Biomedical Informatics Center; and professor, MUSC Department of Internal Medicine. He also holds the SmartState Endowed Chair in Medical Bioinformatics in the SmartState Center for Healthcare Quality.

Les’ research interests include the design and implementation of learning health systems, and focus on the use of collaborative filtering for decision support in medicine to help clinicians with diagnostic and therapeutic reasoning and to help patients be more satisfied with their treatment choices. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and PCORI among others. Additionally, he works as a health systems engineer to create advanced social technical processes that address critical problems in translational and clinical research using information technology. As chief research informatics officer at MUSC, Les works to integrate clinical and research environments to create a learning health system that supports the communities MUSC serves.

Internationally recognized in the field of medical informatics, Les earned a BS in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California Riverside; an MD from UCLA; completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas; completed a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at the Stanford University School of Medicine; and earned an MS in Biomedical Informatics from Stanford University.
