| The Health Sciences South Carolina collaborative, founded in April 2004 to advance health research and education initiatives, has been selected to receive the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Palmetto Vision Award, which will be presented at the Chamber’s 26th Annual Summit on November 3 in Greenville. The award recognizes contributions that public/private partnerships make toward building a more competitive, knowledge-based economy in South Carolina.
Established with a vision to improve the health and economic well-being of the state through a coordinated strategy to advance research and education, Health Sciences South Carolina partners include Clemson University, the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center, the Medical University of South Carolina, Palmetto Health, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, and the University of South Carolina. The partners pledged $2 million each for the next decade toward research projects that support their respective missions and improve the overall health status of South Carolinians. “The Palmetto Vision Award recognizes initiatives that best exemplify successful public-private research partnerships while furthering knowledge-based economic development in the state,” said S. Hunter Howard, Jr., president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. “Health Sciences South Carolina is such an initiative. In its first 18 months of existence, this collaborative has grown significantly, funding three Endowed Chair proposals and submitting three more for consideration in 2006. Research campuses are being developed in three regions of the state, and the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business, Research Division, estimates the collaborative represents an economic impact on the state of nearly $8.5 billion, including more than 47,000 jobs.” For more information about the award or the Annual Summit, please visit www.scchamber.net or call 1-800-799-4601. It works actively to maintain the state’s positive business climate and to enhance the quality of life for all South Carolinians.
